8 Tips Before Taking the Civil Service Exam (CSE)

We’ve shared some tips on taking college scholarship exams in a previous post. This time around, we’ll be focusing on another important test that many Filipinos take: the Civil Service Examination or CSE.

Administered by the Philippine Civil Service Commission (CSC), the CSE is a mandatory exam for anyone who intends to work for the government. In particular, it is a requirement for those who are seeking a permanent position, which comes with security of tenure and many benefits.

The Civil Service Exam

Also known as the Career Service Exam, the CSE is conducted twice a year by the CSC. Applicants can go to the nearest CSC regional or field office in their area, submit the requirements, pay the examination fee (PHP 500), and wait for the confirmation of their test schedule and venue.

Usually, the exam is administered as a pen-and-paper test (CSE-PPT), wherein test-takers are given a test booklet and an answer sheet to fill out. In some cases, such as those in remote areas, for example, a Computerized Examination (CSC COMEX) is also available.

Types of CSE

There are two types or “levels” of the CSE: professional and sub-professional.

The Professional CSE is designed for graduates of four-year college courses. The 3 hour 10 minute exam contains 170 questions, covering verbal, numerical, and analytical ability. Exam passers become eligible to apply for first- and second-level government positions, including technical, scientific, professional, managerial, and higher clerical posts.

Meanwhile, high school graduates and those who have not completed a four-year college course may take the Sub-professional CSE. With a time limit of 2 hours and 40 minutes, the test contains 165 questions covering verbal, numerical, and clerical ability. Exam passers become eligible to apply for clerical, custodial, trades, and crafts work in government offices.

For both the Professional and Sub-professional CSE, a score of at least 80% is needed to pass and earn civil service eligibility.

Tips to Pass Civil Service Exam

For those who will be taking the CSE soon, here are some tips to help you pass the test:

1. Know the Exam Coverage

The Professional CSE covers questions pertaining to verbal and numerical ability, analytical ability, and general information (i.e. current issues, Philippine Constitution. Likewise, the Subprofessional CSE covers similar topics, plus items to test clerical ability. Knowing these things can help you to be prepared for the test.

2. Read and Take Notes

There are many resources, both online and printed materials, like books and reviewers — that you can use to prepare for the CSE. Set aside a specific time each day to read and review the different topics covered.

3. Take Practice Tests

Many books and reviewers come with practice tests that can help you “get a feel” of what the actual exam would be like. The good thing about these tests is they can help you familiarize with the types of questions involved, while checking to see if you can answer them within the time limit.

4. Seek Advice from Test Takers

Get first-hand advice from family and friends who have taken the CSE. Their experience can help as you prepare to take the exam yourself.

5. Research the Test Venue

Aside from knowing the date and time of your test, be sure to research the venue. This way, whether you’re commuting or using a private vehicle, you’ll be able to arrive at the testing site on time.

6. Be Physically Prepared

Preparing yourself physically is just as important as your “mental” preparation. This includes getting enough sleep the night before the test, having a good breakfast, and staying hydrated.

7. Read the Instructions

On the day of the exam, take time to read the instructions on the test booklet. Be aware of the guidelines on proper shading of the answer sheet, and do not write on the test booklet itself.

8. Manage Your Time

Each section of the CSE is given a specific time limit by examiners. This means that you need to manage your time well. Avoid spending too much time on one question; you can always go back to it if there’s still time.
